The book contains the text of the English translation of the unique epical monument of the Buryat people “Abai Geser the Mighty” written down from one of the gifted Buryat story-tellers Manshud Imegenov by a well-known expert of the Buryat folklore Ts. Jamtsarano in 1906. Its published variant (Abai Geser khubun, Moscow, 1995) was consulted. The translation, commentary and articles are completed by Ye. Khundaeva.

Then there was Shereem Minata khan with an iron whip and pig iron thighs who possibly symbolized the starting point ofВ the blacksmith shop, the first steps inВ mastering the art ofВ forging. The sparks and flames coming from the glowing incandescent metal were perceived byВ thРµ ancient forefathers ofВ the Buryats as aВ threatening iron whip which might burn or dazzle.
One might as well recall the epical devil Arkhan who wanted toВ swallow the Sun and the Moon and plunge the Earth into the darkness.

This might be the symbolical representation ofВ the Sun and the Moon eclipse inВ the perception ofВ the ancient Buryats. Geser also fights with the alien tribes who threatened the peaceful life ofВ his kinsmen. InВ the epic those are the Sharaldai Khans. With those evil forces fights the heroic and fair Geser-bator.
On the other hand, the Buryat epic sings glory toВ the same natural prime elements. Not only do those forces ofВ nature harm the people but they do them aВ lot ofВ good.

Man could not do without the fire, water, gifts ofВ the thick forests including wood, plants, game, etc. Man realized it too well. He felt that the fire, water, wood, stone and the like, possessed the positive qualities too. They helped him survive. So he worshipped them, took them toВ be sacral. There was also the cult ofВ the Sun and the Moon which is closely connected with the cult ofВ the light, heat and fire. One cannot but mention the cult ofВ the water, lakes and rivers, as well as the cult ofВ the Master ofВ the taiga that provided the people with food and wood. There were many other cults.
Since there were the sacral cults there certainly were the cult rites, the sacral ceremonies which were toВ defend the man from the evil spirits.
