The book contains the text of the English translation of the unique epical monument of the Buryat people “Abai Geser the Mighty” written down from one of the gifted Buryat story-tellers Manshud Imegenov by a well-known expert of the Buryat folklore Ts. Jamtsarano in 1906. Its published variant (Abai Geser khubun, Moscow, 1995) was consulted. The translation, commentary and articles are completed by Ye. Khundaeva.

Then there was Shereem Minata khan with an iron whip and aВ pig iron thigh who possibly symbolized the starting point ofВ the blacksmith shop, the first steps inВ mastering the art ofВ forging.

The sparks and flames coming from the glowing metal were perceived byВ the ancient forefathers ofВ the Buryats as aВ threatening iron whip which might burn or dazzle. One might as well recall the epical devil Arkhan who wanted toВ swallow the Sun and the Moon and plunge the Earth into the darkness. This might be the symbolical representation ofВ the Sun and the Moon eclipse inВ the perception ofВ the ancient Buryats.
On the other hand, the Buryat epic sings glory toВ the same natural prime elements.

Not only do those forces ofВ nature harm the people but they also do them aВ lot ofВ good. Man could not do without the fire, water, gifts ofВ the thick forests including wood, plants, game, etc. Man realized it too well. He felt that the fire, water, forest, stone, metal possessed the positive qualities too. They helped him survive There was more favourable for him inВ those objects than negative. Hence there are the many cults, that ofВ the Sky, for example, though it sent down toВ the Earth the thunderstorm and lightening, heavy rain and floods. There was the cult ofВ the Sun and the Moon that is closely connected with the light, heat, warmth and fire. One cannot but mention the cult ofВ the Water, lakes and rivers, as well as the cult ofВ the Master ofВ the taiga that provided the Man with the food and wood. There were many other cults. Each hardship inВ life was thought toВ be directly connected with the unkind spirits whom it was needed toВ keep away with help ofВ the deities. This double nature ofВ the earthly and the cosmic elements interfering with the life ofВ man was the reason for the emergence ofВ the pantheons ofВ the gods and deities.
